Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority (CIHA) is working with TurningArt to build an artwork collection for their new long-term care facility, Tsali Care, to be installed in Spring 2024. TurningArt is an art consultancy that specializes in building local artwork collections for clients across medical, commercial, and residential spaces.
The artwork collection at Tsali Care will be Cherokee-driven, designed to reflect the unique cultural compositions and history of the community and to support Cherokee and local artists specifically. There are over 180 artwork opportunities in the collection.
CIHA will consider, for purchase, original works by EBCI and other Cherokee artists, as well as regional artists that visualize aspects of regional and national Cherokee culture as well as reflect the beauty of the landforms found within the EBCI boundary.
REPRESENT
Create pride and ownership by representing the needs, desires, and history of the community, engaging and supporting local artists, and making a commitment to delivering excellence with love and respect for the end user.
IMMERSE
Provide a warm, comfortable, calming, and home-like atmosphere for residents and staff through a variety of artwork types with a cohesive vision and impactful, purpose-driven placement.
INCLUDE
The artwork collection will consider every employee, resident & family member and their varying ages, abilities and backgrounds, now and in the future.
CONNECT
Create opportunities for the community to connect with one another and with nature through storytelling themes, culturally significant subject matter, and unique perspectives.

ARTIST ELIGIBILITY:

SELECTION CRITERIA:
Artworks will be purchased and/or artists commissioned to make new works based on their application’s demonstrated capacity to support the overall art program goals. Above all, artwork should meet one or both of the following criteria:
Artwork considered can be traditional, contemporary, figurative, landscape, or abstract. However, because the facility is a healing environment for elders, it is suggested that artists submit artworks that are warm & positive in tone and contain easily recognizable content if representational.
MEDIA:
Artists are welcome to submit work in one or more of the following media: Wood, Clay, Stone, Basketry, Rivercane Mats, Masks, Beadwork, Pottery, Paintings and Prints, Shell Carving, Glass, Oil, Acrylic, Pastel, Watercolor, Mosaic Tile, Photography, Fiber, Finger Weaving, Quilts, Metal, and Mixed Media.
OPPORTUNITIES:
There are over 180 artworks needed throughout the facility. Approximately 120 opportunities are for original works of art. There is a particular need for large-format (approximately 30x40) 2D artwork (such as painting, drawing, or photography) or artwork that can be framed and hung in a 2-dimensional format (such as finger weaving, quilts, or mats), as well as small 3D art objects suitable for shelves. In addition, there are approximately 50 opportunities for fine art prints.
